Janurary Teacher of the Month: Sandy Mathena

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va (WVVA)-- Congratulations to Sandy Mathena, Cole Chevy and WVVA's Teacher of the Month.

Sandy is a second-grade teacher at White Sulphur Elementary School. She has been teaching for sixteen years, and a majority of that time she spent there.

"It's wonderful, I have no words," said Mathena when WVVA surprised her with her award.

She said her students keep her getting up and coming to work every morning excited to start the day.

"I love the children, and I love to see them learn, and get excited about learning," said Mathena. "I try to make it as fun as I can."

Mathena said the challenge in teaching is finding new ways to get children engaged in classroom material.

"I get excited about finding [lessons] they're going to love," she told WVVA.

She said she loves her job.

"I love doing it, and I hope to continue doing it as long as I can," she said.
