Greenbrier County residents weigh fire levy

LEWISBURG (WVVA) - A proposed fire levy could mean additional taxes for Greenbrier County residents.

Firefighters say the levy would cost the average family about $72 per year.

The money would support fire departments across the county with supplies and equipment.

While some Greenbrier County residents say it's a great idea, others say the price could be too steep.

"It's kind of like insurance," said Tina Tuckwiller of Lewisburg. "You pay it and hope you never have to need it -- but it's there."

Another Lewisburg resident voiced some concern.

"I think it's a good idea to a point," said Lisa Morgan. "But there's a lot of low-income and seniors that live around here and it would just be a shame for them to have to put out additional money."

The levy will be up for vote in the county in early March.
