Area communities creating blueprint for growth

Posted:

BECKLEY (WVVA) - Teams from six communities across West Virginia came together Monday to map out a blueprint for economic growth.

The groups from Bluefield, Princeton, Hinton, Sophia, Marlinton and Richwood talked with state officials about ways to turn their natural resources into economic assets at the Blueprint Summit, held at Tamarack.

Organizers say the 2013 Blueprint Communities each face similar challenges, such as dilapidated structures and substance abuse problems that can hinder workforce development.

The participating communities were chosen because each are from counties surrounding the Summit Bechtel Boy Scout National Reserve -- which will host the national Boy Scout Jamboree this summer.

The representatives from each community will meet monthly with development coordinators until they graduate from the program in November.

Organizers are hopeful by then that the cities will be on a path toward economic development and that other West Virginia communities will be inspired to apply for the program next year.
