CU Unveils 2013 Football Schedule

Posted:

ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University football team will play five games at Callaghan Stadium next season, including three of the final five contests of the year, according to 2013 composite schedule released by the newly-formed Mountain East Conference Friday.

"Top to bottom this is a very challenging schedule and one we are very excited about," Concord Head Coach Garin Justice said. "The two non-conference games will give us a chance to play high-level in-region competition and our Mountain East Conference games will test us week in and week out. The coaching staff and student athletes are all looking forward to what lies ahead."

The Mountain East Conference's 11 football-playing schools will play a nine-game conference schedule in its inaugural season to accommodate week one non-conference obligations before moving to a 10-game round-robin format in 2014.

In addition to its nine game conference schedule, Concord will travel to Lenoir-Rhyne and Bowie State for a pair of non-conference games.

The Mountain Lions open the 2013 season on the road Sept. 7 at Lenoir-Rhyne. Concord defeated LRU, 24-21, at home in its season-opener last season. The Mountain Lions then return home to host West Virginia State on Sept. 14 in what will be its first MEC game. CU will proceed to make road trips to Bowie State on Sept. 21 and West Liberty, Sept. 28, before returning to Callaghan Stadium to face Fairmont State on Oct. 5.

Concord closes out its 2013 campaign with alternating home and away games at Urbana (Oct. 12), vs. West Virginia Wesleyan (Oct. 19), at Charleston (Oct. 26) vs. UVA-Wise (Nov. 2), at Notre Dame (Ohio) (Nov. 11) and against Shepherd in Athens on Nov. 16 to finish off the regular season.

Game times will be announced at a later date.

The Mountain Lions won four of their final five games in 2012 to finish with a 7-4 record. Concord returns 12 starters next season from its final game of 2012, a 23-16 win at West Virginia Wesleyan. CU is an impressive 22-11 dating back to 2010, including a conference championship and appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2011.

The Mountain East Conference announced its formation in August 2012 and submitted credentials in December 2012 seeking approval to become the newest NCAA Division II conference.

The new league's charter members include: Concord University (W.Va.), Fairmont State University (W.Va.), Glenville State College (W.Va.), Notre Dame College (Ohio), Shepherd University (W.Va.), The University of Charleston (W.Va.), The University of Virginia's College at Wise (Va.), Urbana University (Ohio), West Liberty University (W.Va.), West Virginia State University (W.Va.), and West Virginia Wesleyan College (W.Va.) with all fielding football programs.  The MEC's twelfth member, Wheeling Jesuit, currently sponsors 20 NCAA-II sports, but does not include football among its offerings.
