Panel backs A-to-F grading bill for Va. schools

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A major component of Gov. Bob McDonnell's education reform package is on its way to the House of Delegates floor.

The House Education Committee voted 14-6 Wednesday to advance legislation that would direct the state Department of Education to develop a system of grading public schools on an A to F scale. Republican Del. Tag Greason of Loudoun County said an easy-to-understand way of rating school performance will encourage parents to get more involved.

The committee also endorsed an administration-backed proposal to create an Opportunity Educational Institution to take over failing schools.

Legislation allowing schools to open before Labor Day without getting permission from the Department of Education advanced to the House floor, and a bill to require so-called "resource officers" in every school was sent to the Appropriations Committee.
