Former Bobcat Names Big South Freshman of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) – High Point's Stacia Robertson has been named the Big South Conference Women's Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week, while Candace Brown of Gardner-Webb was tabbed The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for games played Jan. 21-27, the League announced today.
 
Robertson, a red-shirt sophomore from Grand Island, Neb., posted a pair of 20-point games to lead the Panthers to a 1-1 record last week.  She got her week started 28 points on 67 percent from the floor to go along with a perfect 8-of-8 from the line.  She also ripped down nine boards and dished out three helpers as High Point downed Longwood on Jan. 24.  Two days later against Radford, the forward poured in 20 points, pulled down six rebounds and came away with three steals, a block and an assist.  The honor marks her first Big South Player of the Week nod this season.
 
Brown, a guard from Hinton, W. Va., had a career week this week, as she helped lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 1-1 record in League play.   In the road loss to Presbyterian on Jan. 24, Brown led GWU with 14 points, then a career-high, on 5-of-8 shooting (62.5 percent) from the floor and 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line.  She also hauled in a team-high eight rebounds, and recorded three steals and two blocks on the defensive end.   Two days later at Charleston Southern, she exceeded those stats, as she poured in a new career-high 22 points, on 10-of-15 shooting (66.7 percent) and was a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.  She led GWU's defensive effort, as she recorded six steals and also hauled in three rebounds in 39 minutes of play.  The honor marks her first Big South Freshman of the Week plaudit this season.
 
Also nominated for women's basketball Player of the Week for Week 11: Ashley James (Campbell), Lakeitha Alston (Charleston Southern), Angelica Henry (Coastal Carolina), Candace Brown (Gardner-Webb), Brittany Campbell (Liberty), Mariah Pietrowski (Presbyterian College), Kelli Riles (UNC Asheville) and Dequesha McClanahan (Winthrop).
 
Also nominated for women's basketball Freshman of the Week for Week 11: RaeChaun Edwards (Campbell), Ashley Rininger (Liberty), Paige Love (UNC Asheville) and Aliyah Kilpatrick (Winthrop).
