Strangers come together to help South Dakota dog get home

Posted:

LEWISBURG (WVVA) - A dog from South Dakota found in Greenbrier County will soon be back home with his family, thanks to the kindness of strangers.

The dog, named Spike, became separated from his caretaker while traveling in the area. He was found by Animal Control and taken in by the Greenbrier Humane Society.

Spike was microchipped, which allowed the Humane Society to contact his owner -- who was unable to make the 40+ hour journey to retrieve him.

The Humane Society turned to social media for help. A post on Facebook resulted in word of Spike's dilemma being spread across the U.S.

The result has been a chain of volunteers willing to transport Spike across the nation from West Virginia to his South Dakota home.

Spike will make stops to change hands in Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois and Iowa, before reaching his destination.
