Flu vaccines still available in Two Virginias

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - It's the middle of flu season, and health officials advise that it's not too late to get vaccinated.

This year's flu season has been especially severe, with tens of thousands of cases reported in Virginia and West Virginia -- both among the highest in the nation.

Mercer County public health nurse Judy Bolton says the flu season doesn't end until March and vaccines are still available for those who haven't gotten one yet.

The Mercer County Health Department has received reports that some local providers have exhausted their resources of flu vaccine -- but shots are still available at the health department.

Bolton says residents can get the flu shot at little to no cost.

"We don't want to see flu vaccines thrown away," Bolton said. "There are people out there who want them and everybody should have them."

Bolton says while you cannot catch the flu from the vaccine, it is still possible for those vaccinated to get the flu. However, the effects are generally less severe on those who have had the shot.

Flu shots are available for those 6 months of age and older.
