Beckley detective captain retires and takes job with county prosecutor

Posted:

BECKLEY (WVVA) --- Captain Jeffrey Shumate of the Beckley Detective Bureau will be retiring and taking a new job with the Raleigh County Prosecutor's Office.

Shumate will serve as the Special Investigator and Security Advisor for Kristen Keller and her staff.  His responsibilities will include investigating for trial preparation, providing security for office employees and finding ways to save the county money for funding inmates.

Shumate says his decision to leave the bureau is bittersweet.  While he will miss his co-workers, he is looking forward to spending more time with his children and using his skills in another capacity.

"I have a good working relationship with [the Raleigh County Prosecutor's Office]," says Shumate.  "Through time, a lot of the people at the prosecutor's office have become like family, and I very much look forward to working with them."

Shumate has been a part of the Beckley Police Department for 23 years.  His last day at the Detective Bureau is this Friday.  There is no word yet on his replacement.
