VA coyote-hunting legislation denied

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The Virginia Senate has rejected legislation that would have allowed people to hunt coyotes on Sundays.

Republican Sen. Tom Garrett of Louisa County spoke of constituents whose sheep and pets have been killed by coyotes.

He said the problem has gotten so bad that 18 localities in the last four years have placed bounties on coyotes. And he denied that his bill would open the door to general Sunday hunting, which is currently not permitted in Virginia.

Many of his colleagues weren't convinced. They said Sunday is the one day rural Virginians can enjoy the woods without worrying about dodging bullets, and they'd like to keep it that way.

The Senate voted 26-13 to kill the legislation.
