Marsh Fork Elementary holds ribbon cutting and dedication

Posted:

COAL RIVER (WVVA) -- The ribbon has been cut.  The welcome has been made.  The Marsh Fork Elementary Bulldogs officially have a new home.

The school held its dedication ceremony Friday at 9:30 a.m.  Guest speakers included Senator Joe Manchin (W.Va. – D).  Following the ceremony was a ribbon cutting, reception and tours of the new school.

"This is one of the best designs in the country," says Manchin.  "The most important this we have and the responsibility we have is to create an environment where every child [is] in a safe environment."

The new school is equipped with state of the art safety features such as a "man trap" where guests are held after they enter the building and before gaining access to the school office, plus keypad locks on every classroom door.

Other advanced additions are smart boards in every classroom and a kitchen a step below the lunch line, so cooks are at eye level with the students.

School officials and private donors have been working for six years to collect enough funding to build the school.  The old location was near a coal silo and slurry pond that could have caused health risks for the Marsh Fork community.

One may think that a final service would be a somber event, but today, it was a celebration.  "The mood today was very good and there were more people here than there has ever been since I've been the pastor.
