W.Va. survey spots record number of eagles

HINTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Volunteers have spotted a record number of eagles during an annual survey in southern West Virginia.
Nearly 100 observers covered sites along the New, Greenbrier and Bluestone rivers, Bluestone Lake, Indian Creek and Moncove Lake.  Saturday's event spotted 27 bald eagles, five golden eagles and two eagles of undetermined species.
Pipestem Resort State Park Naturalist Jim Phillips started the winter surveys in 2006.
He tells The Charleston Gazette that the increase in eagle sightings is due to a growing eagle population in the area and having more observers looking for them.
