Mercer counters high Hep B numbers with free vaccinations

Posted:

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - An alarming statistic has Mercer County health officials working to reduce the county's high rate of hepatitis B cases.

The county's rate is 3.6 – That's 36 people infected for every 100,000 in the population.

The national rate is 1.2.

The county health department plans to offer free hepatitis B vaccinations to people who are at the highest risk of contracting the disease.

Judy Bolton says that the average number of hepatitis B cases in Mercer far surpasses both the state average and the national average, according to latest statistics.
