Community members come together to discuss drug epidemic

BECKLEY (WVVA) - the Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce teamed up with state legislators Wednesday to address a growing need for education reform and the drug epidemic across the state of West Virginia.

The Chamber initiated this discussion with lawmakers and people from the business sector to open the door for communication and work together on what they consider a growing concern.

Officials say studies show that one person dies every day in West Virginia from a drug overdose.

One of the big topics of conversation at the meeting was drug testing in schools, which could be a large cost to taxpayers if implemented.

But, they say that the benefit long-term could be the reduction of the amount of people in jail and the cost to house them there.
