Va. House confirms state's first openly gay judge

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The House of Delegates has voted overwhelmingly to confirm Tracy Thorne-Begland of Richmond as Virginia's first openly gay judge.

Begland was rejected by the Republican-ruled House last spring. He won a full six-year term on the Richmond General District Court bench on a 66-28 vote Tuesday with one abstention.

After he fell 18 votes short of appointment last May, he was appointed on an interim basis by the judges of Richmond Circuit Court to fill a vacancy.
