BECKLEY – The University of Charleston ushered in a new era for higher education in Southern West Virginia Tuesday with the official ribbon cutting of UC-Beckley, as well as an open house for the Beckley community and prospective students.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was held in front of Carter Hall at 11 a.m., while the open house was scheduled from 4-6 p.m. in the library of the Learning Resource Center located at 320 S. Kanawha St. in Beckley.

Tuesday's ribbon cutting ceremony featured remarks from UC President Ed Welch, Regional President Jerry Forster and Beckley Mayor Emmett Pugh. Dr. Welch, Dr. Forster and other faculty and staff members were to be on hand at the open house to answer questions about UC-Beckley and introduce the school to the community, while UC's mascot, MoHarv, poses for photos with children of all ages.

Admissions representatives will also be available to discuss the University's 32 academic offerings across four campuses (Beckley, Charleston, Martinsburg and online) and help prospective students apply for the upcoming spring semester.
