Trail's Tazewell section could open by end of year

POCAHONTAS, Va. (AP) - All-terrain vehicle enthusiasts could begin riding the Spearhead Trail system in Tazewell County by the end of the year.

Southwest Regional Recreation Authority executive director Chuck Riedhammer says mapping and surveys have been completed.

Riedhammer tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that the authority wants to have at least part of the trail system open to the public by the end of the year.

Tazewell County Administrator Jim Spencer says some of the 53 trail routes are old logging trails. That will help construction.

Riedhammer says the authority also hopes to open the trail's section in Buchanan County in 2014.
