CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia is one of only 13 states to comply with new federal identification requirements meant to curb terrorism.
States have until Jan. 15 to comply with the Real ID Act, which enforces stringent proof-of-identity requirements for anyone trying to get a photo ID. Many states have balked because of the costs to come into compliance.
West Virginia implemented the program in January 2012. Officials tell The Charleston Daily Mail (http://bit.ly/138PhDU) many residents have complained about the requirements, such as providing an official copy of a birth certificate.
Eventually, the identifications will be required by anyone wishing to fly or enter a federal building.
The law was passed in 2005 after all but one of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 had ID they should not have been able to obtain.
