Lewisburg parade welcomes the new year

LEWISBURG, W. Va (WVVA)-- People in Lewisburg welcomed 2013 on Tuesday.

The annual Shanghai Parade down Washington Street through town is an annual tradition. Crowds lined the streets to watch the festivities.

"We are a loosely organized committee who comes together to [make this happen]," said Shanghai Parade Committee Chair Mary Ann Mann.

Mann added there is no pre-registration for the event. Those walking in the parade just organize the hour before and head out onto the street at parade start time.

"This parade is always different every year, and that's what makes it so fun."

Mann added that this isn't just about welcoming 2013-- it's also about the history.

"The Shanghai Parade is always here," said Mann. "It's just such a part of this town's history."

The Shanghai Parade Committee said they have evidence of the parade's existence in Lewisburg back into the 1800's, including the confederate camps stationed in town during the Civil War.
