Posted:

NBC News---As the day progresses, so will the crowd in New York's Times Square as we get closer to ringing in 2013.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to be there first-hand to watch the ball drop at the stroke of midnight and welcome the new year.  One ton of confetti will be released from various buildings surrounding times square.

New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says Times Square is the safest place in the world on New Year's Eve.  Extra officers have been assigned, along with K-9 units, and counter-terrorism teams.

Many officers will carry radiation detectors to detect evidence of a dirty bomb.
