Va State Police: Slick roads lead to crashes

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The Virginia State Police is responding to crashes statewide as winter weather moving through the area has made for slick road conditions.

Officials say they've responded to more than 680 traffic crashes across Virginia through 2 p.m. Wednesday.

State police are investigating a traffic fatality in Campbell County but say weather was a factor in the crash.

Most crashes involved damage to vehicles after drivers have lost control, sliding off the road into ditches, embankments, guardrails and one another. A few have resulted in injuries.

Police have extended trooper shifts and have called in additional troopers to respond to crashes to handle the increase in calls for service.

Officials remind motorists to make safety a priority as road conditions will worsen as temperatures drop through the evening and overnight.
