CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- All flags at state facilities in both Virginia and West Virginia are being displayed at half-staff in commemoration of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

Today is the 71st anniversary of the devastating Japanese attack that shoved the United States into World War II.

"Throughout the years, many West Virginians have offered their selfless service to ensure our safety and freedom," Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said. "National Pearl Harbor Day is an opportunity for us to honor those who bravely defended our country during one of the deadliest attacks on our shores and preserve their stories for future generations. I'm honored to recognize their heroism."

In the Commonwealth, Gov. Bob McDonnell was scheduled to attend a remembrance ceremony at 11 a.m. to place a wreath at the Virginia War Memorial.
