Kevin Niewood joined the WVVA Precision Weather Team in November 2012 as the Weekend Meteorologist.
He was born in Manhasset, NY and started growing up in Commack, NY before moving to Parkland, FL in September 1993. People have always asked him when he first became interested in being a meteorologist, and he would always say that he couldn't recall a time where he didn't want to be a meteorologist. That is best explained by the fact that his first memories are from the 1993 Superstorm, where the amount of snow on the ground was taller than he was at the time. His love for meteorology continued to grow in Parkland, a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale in the heart of south Florida. Florida produces some of the most unique thunderstorms in the country, and watching the awesome displays of lightning and experiencing hurricanes fueled Kevin's passion for meteorology.
He took that passion with him to Florida State University where he received his degree in meteorology in April 2012. While at Florida State, Kevin was an active member of FSU Weather, the only entirely undergraduate produced and run weather show in the country. He was also an active member and chapter vice president of the North Florida American Meteorological Society/National Weather Association. Outside of the weather, Kevin loved attending Seminole Athletics events including football, basketball, and baseball.
In addition to FSU Weather, Kevin gained valuable experience as an intern at WTXL, the ABC affiliate in Tallahassee, FL. After his internship under the supervision of veteran meteorologist Casanova Nurse, he became a freelance forecaster at WTXL and provided the Florida Big Bend and southern Georgia with their weather forecasts on a fill-in basis. Kevin is also a big sports fan. You'll find him cheering on his Florida State Seminoles, and New York Giants. Outside of sports, he loves spending time with his family and experiencing the dynamic weather of the Appalachian Mountains.
Kevin is happy and excited to be here in the Two Virginias. If you have any story ideas for him or just feel like saying hi, send him an email at email@example.com
