Group creates Christmas cards for troops

TAZEWELL (WVVA) - It's the season of giving -- and students at one community college are doing their best to make this holiday season a merry one for troops overseas.

Students with the "Great Expectations organization" teamed up with the American Red Cross to deliver hundreds of Christmas cards.

They hosted a holiday card signing reception at Southwest Virginia Community College on Tuesday -- where they collected 500 special thank-yous and holiday greetings.

So far, more than 1,200 cards have been created.

The Great Expectations program was created to benefit students who were in foster care when they graduated high school.

When foster children turn 18, they are often on their own with no one to sign legal documents or do other things a parent or legal guardian can.

The program acts as a resource for foster children who often have nowhere else to turn.
