PANTHER (WVVA) - A man is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase through three counties in southern West Virginia.
Steven Fortner, 26, was arrested near Panther State Forest in McDowell County, when his car struck a rock cliff. The crash was the culmination of a three-county, 50-plus mile chase that began in Gilbert, Mingo County.
Police say Fortner stole gas from a gas station in Gilbert and tried to sell narcotics there.
Multiple crews joined in the pursuit of Fortner through Wyoming County on Route 52, on Cub Creek Road, and eventually into McDowell County.
Police say Fortner had 20 zanex pills on him at the time of his arrest.
Fortner faces multiple charges, including felony fleeing, DUI, petit larceny, fleeing in a vehicle, possession with intent to deliver and kidnapping.
He is currently being held in McDowell County.
