Local shoppers swarm stores for 'Black Friday' deals

BECKLEY (WVVA) - Area shoppers began gathering at malls and shopping centers across the region as early as Thursday night, eager to take advantage of bargains being offered by retailers.

The pace remained steady throughout much of the day on 'Black Friday,' which has come to usher in the holiday shopping season.

Shoppers turned out with the goal of crossing family and friends off their Christmas shopping list, while some were looking for treats for themselves.

Many of the shoppers WVVA News spoke to said the mad dash is worth it to get those desired items under the Christmas Tree, but some felt pushing the sales into Thanksgiving night was too much.

"I just don't think that on a holiday you should make people come out to work," said Kimberly Perkins.

Many stores reported strong sales early into the 'Black Friday' frenzy. Sales will continue at many retailers through the weekend, and online when 'Cyber Monday' sales go into effect.
