W.Va. hunters hit the woods for gun season

Posted:

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia's gun season for deer hunters starts Monday, and the Division of Natural Resources is predicting it will be a good one.

Wildlife resources chief Curtis Taylor says the November firearms season opens the Monday before Thanksgiving every year. The date can be as early as Nov. 19 or as late as Nov. 25.

This is one of the earlier years.

That means hunters are heading out closer to the peak deer rut. Hunters have an advantage when deer are distracted and vulnerable.

The DNR is also reminding hunters that there are 10 counties or portions of counties that require buck firearm hunters to first take an antlerless deer.

As in past years, many counties are open to concurrent antlerless deer hunting on private land and selected public lands.
