Attempted copper theft costs business thousands

MULLENS (WVVA) - Authorities in Wyoming County say $30,000 in damages was done to a Mullens supermarket during an attempted copper theft.

Mullens Police Chief Ray Toler says in a news release that would-be copper thieves attempted to cut a copper pipe at Wayne's Supermarket, causing a Freon leak to the store's main line that supplies the refrigerant to the store's freezers.

The store suffered approximately $30,000 worth of damage and lost goods. Thousands of dollars worth of perishable food items had to be discarded.

The suspects were unable to remove the copper from the store due to the Freon leak.

The stores coolers have since been repaired.

Police are reviewing surveillance video of the incident. Anyone with information is urged to call the Mullens Police Department at 304-294-6666.
