PRINCETON (WVVA) - While most attention may be focused on the White House and the tight battle between President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney, several races with important local implications will also be decided Tuesday night.
In Mercer County, a new County Commissioner will be chosen in a race that pits Democrat Terry Hughes against Republican Gene Buckner for the District II seat. The winner will replace outgoing Jay Mills on the three-person commission.
Mercer voters will also cast votes for magistrate. On the ballot are Sandra Dorsey, Susan Honaker, Rick Fowler, Charles Poe, Jim Dent and Mike Flanigan.

In Tazewell County, town council positions are up for grabs in the towns of Bluefield, Tazewell, Richlands, Pocahontas and Cedar Bluff. Voters in the towns of Tazewell and Bluefield will also choose a mayor. Kes Blackwell and Donald Blankenship are vying for the postion in Tazewell, while R. Lee Riffe and Chuck Presley look to unseat Don Harris in Bluefield.
Giles County voters will elect a Commissioner of Revenue, while town council races will be conducted in Narrows and Glen Lyn.
Monroe County voters will choose a sheriff. Incumbent Mike Gravely is on the ballot against challenger Alan Thomas. The office of assessor is also up for grabs, with Angela Miller and Norbert Netzel on the ballot.
Summers County voters will also have a choice for sheriff, between incumbent Edward Dolphin and challenger Garry Wheeler. Also contested in Summers is the race for commissioner between Jeff Lyon and Tony Williams.
Greenbrier County is also home to a highly-contested sheriff's race between incumbent Jim Childers and challenger Jan Cahill. Also on the ballot in Greenbrier: Ryan Keesee challenges Patrick Via for Prosecuting Attorney and four compete for the office of magistrate.

Linda K. Epling and Sherrie Hunter are competing to represent District II in the Raleigh County Commission. Raleigh Sheriff Steve Tanner faces a challenge from Stan Ellison, while seven names are on the ballot for Magistrate.
The only contested race in Fayette and Wyoming counties is for magistrate.
