Coal producer Alpha cited in W.Va. miner's death

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Federal mining regulators say an Alpha Natural Resources subsidiary failed to comply with safety standards, leading to the March death of a West Virginia coal miner.

According to a report from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, the company did not develop a plan to properly support mine walls and failed to conduct adequate safety examinations at the Virginia-based Alpha's Kingston No. 2 Mine near Scarbro.

Authorities said 34-year-old Jeremy Sigler of Pool was killed in March when material from the wall of the mine struck him. He had 10 years of experience.

The Charleston Gazette reports that MSHA issued five enforcement actions to the mine operator. West Virginia mining regulators had previously cited the company and five mine managers for violations related to the incident.
