FAYETTEVILLE, W. Va (WVVA)-- Bridge Day 2012 meant Route 19 shut down at the New River Bridge on Saturday.
A festival lined the street on the bridge from both ends, and at the middle? BASE jumpers.
A diving board, a platform, and the newest addition, a catapult engineered by Jason Bell, were the three ways over four hundred jumpers could choose to fall the 876 feet to the river below.
Among the jumpers this year, a bride and groom, happily wed on the platform before taking their first jump together as a married couple.
Bridge Day brings people from all over the world to Fayetteville and the New River Gorge. Visitors spent the day repelling, rafting, BASE jumping, hiking, and even just enjoying nature and the many vendors on the street.
"This event is the only time people are allowed to walk on the bridge," said Bridge Day Chair Cindy Dragan. "It's also great publicity for this beautiful place."
