UPDATE: Mechel announces temporary idling of 3 Bluestone mines

Posted:

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - Mechel-Mining has issued a press release announcing a temporary halting of parts of its Bluestone mining operations in West Virginia.

Operations at Keystone, Justice Energy and Dynamic Energy will be temporarily suspended. Operations at Frontier, K-2, Red Fox, and Coal Mountain washing plants will continue.

Following is the full release:

Moscow, Russia — October 22, 2012 – Mechel OAO (NYSE: MTL), one of the leading Russian mining and metals companies, reports temporary halting of mining facilities of Mechel Bluestone (West Virginia, USA), which is part of the Group's mining division.

Due to accumulated inventories of coal, Mechel decided to temporarily suspend mining at some facilities of Mechel Bluestone's mining complexes — Keystone, Justice Energy and Dynamic Energy. The Frontier mine in Wyoming County, which is part of Dynamic Energy, as well as the K-2, Red Fox and Coal Mountain washing plants, will continue operating.

Taking into account current contracts, as well as inventories of 650,000 tonnes of raw coal and 345,000 tonnes of finished product, operations at the suspended facilities are expected to resume in two to three months. All obligations under pre-existing contracts will be met.

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - In an email to WVVA's Josh Frketic, Mechel-Mining press secretary Dmitriy Kuchumov says the company plans to publish a press release 'shortly' regarding the issue of idled mines.

The email states the company cannot comment further until then.

WVVA.com will publish the contents of the press release once it is received.

PINEVILLE (WVVA) - A number of miners in southern West Virginia employed by Mechel-Bluestone have received news this week not to come back to work until further notice, WVVA News has learned.

A miner at one of the affected mines -- Double Bonus Mine on Pinnacle Creek Road in Pineville -- tells WVVA News that the miners there were told Thursday the mine was being idled until further notice.

The miner says the affected workers were told they could file for low-earning unemployment and that a timetable for return was uncertain.

At least four other underground and surface mines in the area were said to be affected, including Frontier Mine in Coal Mountain, and Paycar Mine in Kimball.

Despite multiple attempts by WVVA News -- both by phone and in person -- Mechel-Bluestone officials could not be reached for comment.

Typically, businesses that conduct layoffs must file what is called a 'warn notice' to Workforce West Virginia, so they are prepared to assist the affected workers. However, when filing for  low-earning unemployment, a warn notice is not necessary.

Mechel is a Russian-based coal and steel producer, founded in 2003 according to the company's website.

Mechel-Bluestone is headquartered in Beckley.
