UPDATE: W.Va. treasurer has unclaimed check for Matt Lauer

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia's treasurer has a check waiting for Matt Lauer, albeit a small one.

Treasurer John Perdue called the "Today" show co-host during Thursday's broadcast and told him he left $65 in a bank checking account in West Virginia.

Lauer began his television career as producer of the noon news at WOWK-TV in Huntington in 1979.

Perdue says Lauer could come to West Virginia and use the money to buy dinner. But Lauer has another idea.

Lauer says he'll increase the amount and donate the money to the United Way of Central West Virginia.

Perdue is the custodian for unclaimed property in the state.
