BECKLEY (WVVA) - Have you seen those 'Turnpike detour' signs along the Interstate and wondered what they mean?
The signs designate alternate routes along the Turnpike that can be taken in the event an emergency detour is necessary.
There are five alternate routes along the 77-mile stretch of interstate. The goal of the detour routes is to keep traffic flowing.
General Manager Greg Barr says the Parkways Authority is in the process of holding meetings with area first responders to familiarize them with the detour routes.
Overhead messaging signs will warn motorists when the detour routes are in use.
