W.Va. doe season on some land set for Oct. 25-27

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia's antlerless deer season will open earlier than usual this year in some places.

In counties that have a firearms season for antlerless deer, the Division of Natural Resources says hunters can head out onto private land Oct. 25 through Oct. 27.

Wildlife resources chief Curtis Taylor says the extra days have several advantages, including warmer weather than in late November and December.

Taylor says that if enough antlerless deer are harvested early in the fall, there should be more food for the remaining deer, and hunters may observe more intense rut behavior among bucks in November.

He says killing antlerless deer is also the key to maintaining healthier, more productive herds.
