2 die in bizarre W.Va. hammer attack

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. (AP) -- Two men are dead in a bizarre attack in Mingo County.

Police tell media outlets 43-year-old Phillip Gilman attacked his roommate, 73-year-old Alfred Curry, with a hammer Wednesday night. Curry collapsed outside the home and a passing motorist stopped, realized he was the half-brother of Mingo County Commissioner Dave Baisden and called Baisden.

When Baisden arrived, police say Gilman jumped into Baisden's truck and ran over Curry. A short time later, Gilman returned and was shot by a volunteer firefighter as he fought with Baisden.

State Trooper D.M. Williamson says Gilman fled again. When state troopers and local police found Gilman, he charged at them with the hammer and was shot.

Curry and Gilman died at the scene.

Williamson said the firefighter would not be charged.

An investigation is ongoing.
