Turkey season starts Saturday in 36 W.Va. counties

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- It's wild turkey time in West Virginia. The fall hunting season starts Saturday in 36 counties.

The Division of Natural Resources predicts this year's harvest will be similar to last year, when hunters took 1,186 turkeys in 33 counties.

Wildlife Resources Chief Curtis Taylor says the mast crop is spotty. Some areas have abundant food supply for the birds while it's scarce in others.

That means flocks will likely spread out, but Taylor says hunters willing to scout or walk should have no problem find them.

Fourteen counties will have a four-week season, while seven will have a two-week split season. Another 15 will have a one-week season.
