NEWS RELEASE:  Tazewell, VA—Scuff up your cowboy boots and mosey on down to Crab Orchard Museum for the Barn Dance, Sat., Oct. 13th from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. in the Red Barn.  "This is more of a country & western kind of dance, so sharpen up your Texas two-step," says Charlotte Whitted, museum director.  "Preston Buchanan will call traditional square dancing too, but there'll be a few waltzes mixed in as well."  The Barn Dance features live music by Southern Country and gentle dance instruction by the Recycled Teenagers, for those less familiar with the steps.

"The museum ordinarily showcases bluegrass or old time music, so this event's music has a different feel to it, but with similar roots and instruments.  Country & western music always means a good time for the whole family."

A barn dance has been a fall tradition in our farming community for hundreds of years, to celebrate the harvest and conclude the hard farm work before winter sets in.  Neighbors would help each other to bale hay, chop corn, can vegetables and fruits from the garden, and prepare for cold weather.

Sponsorship by Gasco enables the museum to offer free admission for museum members and only $5 admission for non-members, with kids 12 and under free.  "We get folks of all ages that like to come: college students, old-timers, baby boomers, kids in our pioneer apprentice program, home schoolers, Southwest Virginia natives and newer arrivals.  Just put on your boots--everyone is welcome."  If you join the museum's membership that night, admission is free.

The museum will provide cold drinks, water and coffee.  Attendees are asked to bring a finger food to share, in the spirit of neighborliness and in celebration of the harvest.  For more information, contact the museum at 276-988-6755 or info@craborchardmuseum.com.
