UPDATE: Mall grease fire under investigation

Posted:

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - A Mercer Mall restaurant will remain closed until the investigation into a Wednesday evening grease fire is completed.

Fire crews responded to the mall Wednesday evening after an apparent grease fire broke out in the kitchen of the Lotus Garden restaurant.

Chief Dave Thompson with the Glenwood-Green Valley Fire Department said no injuries were reported and no customers were in severe danger. However, the inside of the restaurant did suffer some damage.

Thompson said heavy smoke filled the restaurant when crews arrived, but the sprinkler system had extinguished the fire.

All customers were out of the restaurant, and much of the surrounding area of the mall had been evacuated, Thompson said.

The restaurant will remain closed until the state fire marshal investigates. That investigation is expected on Thursday.
