BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - The elderly Bluefield man shot dead at his home last Monday was laid to rest Tuesday.
Funeral services for John Douglas Watkins, 79, were held noon at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Bluefield -- within walking distance from the Watkins home.
The Rev. James Palmer, the couple's longtime pastor, will officiate the service.
Watkins -- a veteran -- will be buried at the National Cemetery in Grafton, W.Va.
Watkins' wife, Monika, continues to recover in a Roanoke hospital from injuries she sustained in last Monday's attack -- including a gunshot wound to the head. Family members told WVVA News Tuesday that her condition had improved slightly, and she was no long in the Intensive Care Unit.

The suspect in the shooting, Donald Adams, confessed on-camera to the crimes a day before hanging himself inside his cell at the Bluefield City Jail.
Adams reportedly knew the victims and frequently visited them.
