Historic Tazewell Co. opera house undergoing repairs

Posted:

POCAHONTAS, Va. (AP) -- Local governments and a private organization are working to preserve the historic Pocahontas Opera House.

Pocahontas Mayor Benjamin Gibson says some bricks on the building's front have come loose and will be replaced, along with some of the mortar. A ramp will be installed to improve access for people with disabilities.

Gibson tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that the town, Tazewell County and Historic Pocahontas are working together on the project.

Tazewell County Supervisor Thomas Childress secured a $5,000 grant from the county to pay for the project. Historic Pocahontas is donating the use of its lift.

The opera house was built in the late 1880s by the Southwest Virginia Improvement Company. It was one of the first brick structures in Pocahontas.
