Traveling quilt on display at WVU

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Several quilts that are part of a traveling exhibit on slavery are on display this week at West Virginia State University.

The Underground Railroad Secret Quilt Code Exhibit is being held through Saturday in Institute. It showcases five generations of quilts. Many of them were used as a means of communication for 19th-century slaves.

The Charleston Gazette (http://bit.ly/VDRrbT ) reports Teresa Kemp brought the exhibit to the university because nearly 30 of her family members are West Virginia State alumni. The exhibit will return to its home base in Atlanta next week

Kemp has spent her life studying and preserving her family's history and hopes the exhibit will encourage other families to do the same.
