BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - A man who confessed to shooting an elderly Bluefield couple has committed suicide in jail, the State Police have confirmed to WVVA News.

Donald Adams, 54, was found unresponsive in his cell at Bluefield City Jail around 2:45 p.m., Trooper A.P. Christian said.

Christian said it appears Adams hanged himself with shoestrings.

EMS was called and unsuccessful attempts were made to revive Adams.

Adams had last been checked on by police around noon.

Christian said no note was left. Adams was not considered suicidal by police.

Adams was still wearing his street clothes while he awaited transport to Southern Regional Jail. Police say he was to be transported later Wednesday.

The West Virginia State Police will be conducting the investigation into Adams' death.

WVVA News will have more on this developing story live from the Bluefield Police Department at 6 p.m.
