Greenbrier Co. sheriff candidates address 'unethical behavior'

Posted:

LEWISBURG (WVVA) - Candidates for Greenbrier County Sheriff spoke out at a candidates' forum Tuesday when asked about the recent drug-stealing allegations against a former deputy.

Both incumbent Sheriff Jim Childers and challenger Jan Cahill were asked what they would do if an officer were found 'exhibiting unethical behavior while on the job.'

"You've got to be consistent in the way you handle things," Cahill said. "You can't do selective enforcement and situation ethics. And in that situation the sheriff, rightfully so, gave that officer the option to resign."

"I literally cried when I had to let that officer go," Childers said of the deputy accused of stealing drugs and money from the department. "You know why? He was a good officer. He did good work. He made a mistake, and it was a mistake that cost him his job."
