W.Va. community-tech student default rate high

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- More than 24 percent of West Virginia's community and technology college students default on their federal students.

Recent figures from the U.S. Department of Education show that the default rate for students attending four-year institutions in the state is 11 percent.

New River Technical College vice president Stephen Benson tells the Charleston Daily Mail that community and technical college students face a variety of financial problems.

Many work full time, are older or have families. Some transfer credits, and debt, from other schools where they tried to earn a degree.

West Virginia Northern Community College vice president Janet Fire says about 83 percent of the school's students needed financial aid last year.

Fike and Benson say there also are students who obtain financial aid and don't return to school.
