AEP Customers in Va. Could See Rate Increase

Posted:

ROANOKE, Va.- Appalachian Power is asking Virginia regulators to increase what it charges customers to recover costs related to renewable energy.

The company said Friday it has filed a request with the Virginia State Corporation Commission.

If approved, rates would increase the monthly bill for the typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity by more than 25 cents.

The company says it has met the state's renewable energy goals for the last two years primarily by buying wind generation and about 4 percent of the energy delivered to customers comes from renewable sources. A portion of the costs to buy renewable energy is recovered by the company through rate increases to customers.

Appalachian Power serves about 500,000 customers in Virginia.
