McDowell miner featured in 'Coal' TV series dies

PREMIER (WVVA) - A McDowell County miner featured in last year's 'Coal' TV series on Spike TV has died.

Andy Christian, 51, of Premier, died Sunday at Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke.

A brother-in-law tells WVVA News that Christian suffered from heart and kidney ailments.

Known as 'The Legend,' Christian was one of the miners of McDowell County's Cobalt Coal -- the mining company that was spotlighted in Spike TV's 2011 reality series 'Coal.'

According to his bio at Spike TV's website, Christian was a third-generation coal miner. He worked as a miner operator for Cobalt.

Christian is survived by a wife and two sons -- one of which was also featured on the television show.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at the Ark of Safety Church in Roderfield. Burial will follow at Christian Cemetery.

Friends may visit at the church Wednesday night after 6 p.m.

Fanning Funeral Home of Iaeger is in charge of the arrangements.
