WV Residents Eligible for Benefits from Derecho Storms

Posted:

BECKLEY, W.Va. - Residents in four West Virginia counties are eligible to collect unemployment benefits if their jobs were disrupted by fierce wind storms in June.

The counties are Raleigh, Fayette, Nicholas and Kanawha.

A derecho lashed the state June 29, knocking out power to 680,000 utility customers. A derecho delivers hurricane-force winds.

WorkForce West Virginia Director Russell Fry says residents of those four counties whose work was disrupted by the storms can apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance benefits.

Fry says the destruction from the storms was widespread, affecting workers in those counties.

Fry said claims must be filed by Oct. 22.
