FEMA OKs public aid for W.Va. storm costs

Posted:

The state and local governments are getting federal disaster assistance to help pay costs related to severe storms in late June and early July.

The Charleston Gazette says the Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved more than $1 million in public assistance. The funding can be used to pay for debris removal, emergency protective measures and repairs to public facilities.

A windstorm on June 29 and subsequent storms left three people dead and more than 680,000 customers without electricity across the state.

Federal officials denied Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's request for individual assistance to residents affected by the storms. Tomblin is appealing the decision.
