VT Gets Big Grant

Posted:

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Tech has received a nearly $1 million research grant from the National Science Foundation.

The Blacksburg school says the three-year, $999,531 award will be used to increase the efficiency of laboratory processes that make custom DNA molecules using industrial engineering.

The Roanoke Times reports (http://bit.ly/Q7uTP4 ) that the project provides cross-training opportunities to biology and engineering students by fabricating DNA naturally and synthetically to make larger DNA molecules that correspond to computer-designed sequences.

The Creative Research Awards for Transformative Interdisciplinary Ventures grants are awarded to projects that help break disciplinary boundaries that may occur within the National Science Foundation.
